Sleep Bruxism = rhythmic masticatory muscle activity
Sleep Bruxism – parasomnia and parafunctional activity characterized by clenching (tonic activity) and/or repetition of phases of muscle activity (phasic activity) that produce grinding
- In part due to microarousals in the CNS
- Followed by rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA)
- NOT related to occlusion!!!
So can not really stop but can limit damage by
- Deprogram hyperactive muscles (anterior deprogrammer)
- Put in CR
- Ensure anterior guidance
- Protect everything with night guard (problem is asymptomatic patients are not compliant)
