Sleep Bruxism = rhythmic masticatory muscle activity

Sleep Bruxism – parasomnia and parafunctional activity characterized by clenching (tonic activity) and/or repetition of phases of muscle activity (phasic activity) that produce grinding

  • In part due to microarousals in the CNS
  • Followed by rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA)
  • NOT related to occlusion!!!

So can not really stop but can limit damage by

  1. Deprogram hyperactive muscles (anterior deprogrammer)
  2. Put in CR
  3. Ensure anterior guidance
  4. Protect everything with night guard (problem is asymptomatic patients are not compliant)
