Turner’s tooth – hypoplasia

There are four types of hypoplasia described

  • Type I is enamel discoloration
  • Type II is abnormal coalescence
  • Type III is some enamel missing
  • Type IV is a combination of the above

Turner’s hypoplasia typically only affects one tooth in the mouth, as opposed to most forms of hypoplasia that impact multiple teeth.  This fact leads us to believe it is a localized event causing the hypoplasia and more specifically trauma in the anterior OR infection of the deciduous tooth.

The treatment depends on the severity.  The goal is to cover or replace the missing and/or damage outer layer of enamel and cover all the dentin.  If the damage is smaller a filling may be suffice, for more extensive damage a crown will be fabricated.
