Microbial nanowire influence on bacterial biofilm in the mouth
Nanowires and bacterial ability to transfer electrons along these nanowires is a recent discovery. Moh El-Nagger recently produced a great video on these nanowires in action
The significance to dentistry is that these nanowires likely play a role in human biofilm which is what all dental disease stems from. Understanding methods that can disrupt the biofilm will likely lead to less dental decay and periodontal disease. It would also make all other forms of treatment far more effective. El-Nagger is working with the USC dental school now on this area of molecular biology.
