Temporary dental veneers
Taking care of your temporary dental veneers.
Temporary dental veneers can be a nerve racking time for some patients but with a few rules, there is usually no issues. For more information on dental veneers check out our main page on veneers.
What to expect after your impression visit and you leave with the temporary dental veneers.
A few of the topics we cover with our patients when they leave with their temporary veneers.
Pain after your visits?
You will have some discomfort for the first few days. Your gums will be red/black and irritated and your teeth may be slightly sensitive. These symptoms should subside within a few days to a week. We have found that patients can eliminate most of the discomfort by following our 3x3x3 rule (3 ibuprofen, 3 times a day for 3 days). If that does not manage your sensitivity please contact our office.
Biting and eating with temporary dental veneers.
If the bite feels “high” after the numbness wears off we will need to see you back for a minor adjustment, which is quick and easy. Be cautious with your teeth. Try not to bite into anything too hard with the temporaries. You can not bite or eat ice, or anything frozen, hard bread, taco shells, etc. Do not try to open anything with your temporaries. Do not eat anything sticky like taffy or caramel.
What will the temporary veneers look like?
While they are not as nice as your final dental veneers, they will be what we consider very nice looking. As an example you can see some of our temporary dental veneers below. The top two pictures are of temporary dental veneers on the front 4 teeth and the bottom picture is of the final dental veneers.
These are your trial run of veneers. The shape will be similar to your finals, the shade will be close, but the feel will be worse. The finals will be smoother and the color more natural. We need to know that you can function and talk with these teeth at this shape. If they break, we may need to redesign the veneers.

If you can see the difference between our upper photos of the temporary dental veneers and the lower photos of the final dental veneers, then you have an eye for detail! They are different but most of the difference between your temporary and final will be in feel and the way light reflects off of the materiel.
Care instructions for your temporaries.
It is extremely important to keep your temporary dental veneers and your gums healthy and clean. You must adhere to the recommended routine for the next three weeks.
- Brush normally 2-3 times a day.
- If a laser treatment was done on your gum tissue, use the rubber tip stimulator and go around the area that was lasered for next 3 weeks.
- You have a small syringe with a fuzzy tip filled with hydrogen peroxide. Using a liberal amount, scrub around the gumline of the temporaries 2-3 times a day for the first 2 weeks.
- Use the chlorehexidine in the syringe around the gum line for the third week and then swish with it for 1 full minute at least twice a day.
- Super floss is to be used every day, at least twice a day. The order is brush – gum stimulator – syringe – super floss.
Can you wear your night guard or your retainer?
That depends but likely the answer is no. We need to discuss this together and make a plan. We will be making a new retainer when we are done.
How do we make temporary dental veneers?
They are plastic that we shrink fit to your teeth. For more technical information dentists can search dental town for steps.
